The Chinese Pagoda is a landmark that symbolises diversity and welcomeness of all people to Birmingham. Donated to the city and erected in 1998 by the owner of a Chinese supermarket chain, in thanks to the city for providing a home and support over the years.
The Chinese Quarter of the city looks colourful and full of energy during Chinese New Year celebrations, with lanterns and streamers zigzagging the streets.
The lanterns are painted with vivid red inks to produce a warm glow. The fireworks are created using powered dye, then cut out and raised to give a sense of movement to the piece. Powder dye produces different results every time, resulting in no two pieces looking the same.
